Often times I have people that were hypnotized before by someone else tell me they way I do it is very different than they way another hypnotist did things. I have also had people tell me that they were amazed I was successful at hypnotizing them because other hypnotists and hypnotherapists had told them they were un-hypnotizeable. The reason this is so common is because not all hypnotists do things the same way. So today, I am going to talk a little bit about the techniques I use and why they make my hypnotherapy so effective.
The first thing to keep in mind is that there are many, many, many “branches” of hypnosis out there today that different practitioners utilize. These “branches” or “schools” of thought are usually named for the founder or creator and each modality employs different techniques. Ericksonian Hypnosis is a famous branch based on the teachings and techniques of Milton Erickson, a psychiatrist and hypnotist well known for his “artfully vague” style which used complex linguistic patterns to bypass the minds analytic filter (we call this the Critical Area of the mind) so that his suggestions went directly into the Subconscious. Since his passing, Milton Erickson has become known as one of the most influential and effective hypnotherapists that ever lived, because his unique “conversational” style of hypnosis created rapid and long lasting changes in peoples lives and oftentimes to the person being worked with felt as if Erickson was simply telling them a story. This is why his technique is often referred to as “conversational hypnosis”, because the person didn’t become “hypnotized” in the sense that most people think – They were wide awake, talking, eyes open, and so on. Today the best hypnotherapists all utilize at least some of Erickson’s techniques, and that’s not all! Salesmen, pickup artists, and public speakers all utilize various forms of this conversational “waking hypnosis” today.
Yet even though Ericksonian hypnosis is often regarded as the #1 most effective branch of hypnosis, and even though I DO use Ericksonian techniques every session, there is another hypnotist that made an even bigger contribution in my opinion. You see, a few decades ago it was believed that only certain people could be hypnotized. In fact, hypnotists were only able to hypnotize about 40% of the population (sadly many hypnotists and hypnotherapists still perpetuate this myth to this day because they don’t know better). But hypnosis is a naturally occurring human experience, and we go into hypnosis naturally multiple times every single day. Luckily for us a man named Dr John Kappas came along and discovered something called “Suggestibility” which made it possible to hypnotize everybody for therapy – Not just 40% of the population. His techniques and theories are so revolutionary that it literally changed the face of medical hypnosis. Unfortunately he is not as well known as Dr Milton Erickson. Dr Kappas is the reason why I am able to hypnotize people that other hypnotists have said were not hypnotizeable. Because of him I can hypnotize everybody and 100% of the population can benefit from hypnotherapy.
I also use other modalities besides Ericksonian and Kappasinian Hypnosis however, and I supercharge my hypnotherapy sessions by using these other techniques and blending it all together:
I use medical Biofeedback equipment quite a bit which let’s me see exactly what is going on with the brain biologically. I work in conjunction with medical doctors and this helps me work with everything from attention issues, pain, anxiety, and so on.
I also use Freudian/Jungian Graphotherapeutic techniques. By analyzing doodles, handwriting samples, and so forth I can see what is going on in your subconscious mind. The mind works in terms of pictures, images, metaphors, and so on, and this is the only therapy I have found that works with this aspect of the subconscious mind.
In addition to the techniques mentioned above, I use many different NLP techniques. NLP is based on Milton Erickson and other therapists that were thought to be the most successful therapists in the world. By analyzing the techniques they used and putting them together a very powerful therapeutic modality was formed that we call Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). NLP is used around the world by therapists, public speakers, salesmen, and so on.
Imaginative Role Enactment Therapy (AKA Past-Life Regression Therapy) is also something I am using more and more as time goes on. This is a very famous form of hypnosis where the client is guided back to experience past lives in which they may have lived – But I have discovered that you don’t have to believe in reincarnation to benefit from this therapy. If you just explore these roles as if you were pretending to be this person it can be very therapeutic, and many people have benefited from this therapy over the years. The thing to remember is that in hypnosis you can feel as if you really are this different person, and it can be an incredibly life-changing experience.
I also use Therapeutic Imagery. Therapeutic Imagery is much like “Guided Meditation” which is so popular today, and in fact, guided meditation is a form of Hypnotic Imagery (it’s just that most people don’t know that what they are doing is a form of hypnosis). Therapeutic Imagery allows me to create a safe world within the clients mind which we can explore solutions to problems they are having in a safe and non-threatening place. This is one of the most powerful forms of hypnosis there is, and practitioners utilizing this lead their clients to deep and powerful realizations – accessing a wealth of knowledge and guidance all of which comes from within. Imagery also allows me to have the client create “control rooms” and other amazing things where they can access dials, switches, and so on. By adjusting these dials and switches the client can decrease or increase desired behaviors instantly. This is great for helping the client work with everything from procrastination to pain management to sexual performance/satisfaction to eating more or less and on and on. The possibilities are endless!
As you can see I use many different techniques in my hypnotherapy practice and of course I can’t list everything that I do in one small blog article – But the thing all the techniques that I use have in common is that they work incredibly well.
