If you randomly ask any group of children if they like getting shots at the doctor, most likely they would all agree that they’d avoid it if they could. But anxiety, fears, and phobias surrounding needles and injections isn’t only for children. Every day a very large amount of adults also deal with the anxiety of those awful needles that live at the doctors’ office, dentists, and pharmacies. From getting vials of blood drawn during routine medical exams, to getting teeth pulled, even getting those annual flu shots at the pharmacy, the fact is getting injections is a part of life for us. Some people such as diabetics even have to endure self-injections multiple times per day in many cases. But thankfully a batch of new studies have shown that hypnosis can greatly aid those of us that are still a bit squeamish when it comes to needles. Lets take a look at what just a few of these studies found.
In a dental study a patient was taught meditation-hypnosis so that she was able to achieve good relaxation within just a few minutes. She was then instructed to practice the technique by herself at home. She stated that it helped her reduce her overall anxiety with very good results. The patient said that she was finally able to go to her dentist and have the local anesthetic injections for the tooth extractions. Dentures had been made and she was very pleased. The patient had been scheduled to come in for a final hypnosis appointment before the procedure but she said that it was not necessary as the relaxation technique was enough to allow her to have the necessary injections and dental work done!
Next was a case study of severe needle phobia in a 5-year-old boy who learned to utilize a self-hypnosis technique to facilitate intravenous (i.v.) cannula (a tube that can be inserted into the body, often for the delivery or removal of fluid or for the gathering of data) placement. He was diagnosed with Bruton’s disease at 5 months of age and required monthly intravenous infusions. The boy had received inhalational general anesthesia for i.v. cannulation on 58 occasions (poor kid!). Initially, this was because of difficult venous access but more recently because of severe distress and agitation when approached with a cannula. Oral premedication with midazolam or ketamine proved unsatisfactory and since these heavy-duty medications were not working hypnotherapy was finally considered. Following a 10-minute conversational hypnotic induction, the 5-year-old was able to use hypnotic switch-wire imagery to dissociate sensation and movement in all four limbs in turn (basically, the child learned how to turn certain areas of the body “off”). Two days later the boy experienced painless venepuncture without the use of topical local anesthetic cream. There was no movement in the ‘switched-off’ arm during i.v. cannula placement. This report adds to the increasing body of evidence that hypnosis represents a useful, additional tool that anesthetists may find valuable in everyday practice.
The thing to remember is that everybody can benefit from hypnosis in one way or another – and in this case, it really was a life-changer for the participants of the studies. Hypnotherapy can really enhance your quality of life, and if you are experiencing difficulty I would love to be the hypnotherapist that helps YOU. You can always call 424-27-THINK to schedule an appointment, you can come to my office if you are local to Los Angeles or I also offer skype and telephone sessions. Every day new and amazing scientific information comes out that demonstrates how powerful hypnosis is, but a new study says that hypnosis can actually make you look and feel younger!
This study looked at whether or not hypnosis could be used to lower the stress-related hormone cortisol and raise the anti-aging hormone dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S). Not only did it work, at the end of the study it was shown that the hypnosis group had increased their DHEA-S levels by 16% and reduced their cortisol levels by 12.3% when compared to the other group. It was also noted that those in the hypnosis group now had DHEA-S levels equivalent to someone who was 5 to 10 years younger!
Twelve healthy subjects were recruited and randomly assigned to one of two groups – One group got hypnosis and the other one didn’t. Those in the hypnosis group were brought together and taught self-hypnosis and mental training to reduce cortisol levels and increase DHEA-S. They were then asked to integrate these techniques into their daily life for the next six-months. The authors conclude that frequent application of a self-hypnosis program several days a week was successful in changing the adrenal secretion of DHEA-S and cortisol – and can have a beneficial effect on stress reduction, emotional stability, performance and health.
So why is it so important to increase DHEA-S and decrease cortisol??? The study authors note that the most important stress hormone in the body is the adrenal hormone cortisol and DHEA-S has been considered as a marker for biological aging. Not only is DHEA important for looking younger but falling concentrations of DHEA-S have been observed in both mental and psychological stress and physical illness, so having more of this means you feel younger! Low concentrations of DHEA-S in blood have been correlated with many age-related diseases and increased plasma DHEA-S has been connected with a reduction in age-related diseases and alleviated chronic stress-load.
Participants in the self-hypnosis group were taught basic relaxation and self-hypnosis techniques. These techniques are very simple and can bring major benefits. One of the most common things I am asked when people find out I am a hypnotherapist is: “Is hypnosis even real”? The answer is yes, and although it isn’t like what we are used to seeing in the movies what may surprise you even more is that it is a naturally occurring aspect of the human experience. What does this mean for you? It means that you enter into hypnosis multiple times every single day and you don’t know you are doing it!
Here are some examples:
*Have you ever yawned when somebody else yawned?
*Have you ever cried or seen someone else cry during a sad movie?
*Have you ever driven home and been so occupied by your thoughts that you missed your exit on the freeway, or arrived home and realized you were essentially driving on “auto-pilot” and didn’t necessarily have to “think” about the commute at all? Many people do this every day.
*Have you ever performed your work or a hobby with intense focus?
*Many athletes talk about being “in the zone” on some games where they play exceptionally well, have you ever experienced this?
*Have you ever had a smell, taste, or other sensory stimulus cause you to remember feelings, or something that happened several years ago, sometimes even bringing up memories from childhood?
*Have you ever met somebody that you instantly did or did not “like” or get along with?
*Have you ever walked, talked, or eaten food in your sleep?
*Have you ever saw an advertisement for food on TV and thought “Oh man that looks good”?
*Have you ever purchased a product that was “on sale” for a lower price?
*Have you ever had a song get “stuck” in your head?
These are all examples of hypnotic phenomena occurring without the use of formal hypnotic inductions. There are so many examples of hypnosis without hypnosis as most people understand it that if I were to try to list them all I could fill a book with only examples of people being hypnotized while they have no idea they are hypnotized. As I said earlier, you enter into and exit out of hypnotic states multiple times every single day.
Trance states like the ones we usually think of when we think of hypnosis have been documented for thousands of years in every culture of the world. Everything from Temple Sleep in Egypt to the Oracles of Delphi in Greece are all examples of real hypnotic phenomena.
So remember: The question isn’t “is hypnosis real or not”, the question is, “have I been hypnotized yet today and just don’t know it” 😉
